Osteopenia and osteoporosis are concerning conditions that increase the risk of fractures, prolong recovery time, and heighten complications during surgeries like joint replacements. While women are more susceptible, men are also at risk.

Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis involve adopting a healthy diet low in saturated fat, processed foods, and alcohol, while incorporating calcium, protein, fruits, and vegetables for bone health. Exercise, particularly weight-bearing exercises, is crucial in making bones denser and stronger.

Resistance training provides the necessary stimulus for bone density improvements, unlike activities such as cycling, water-based exercises, pilates, or yoga. Even resistance training with light weights and high repetitions may not suffice. Starting resistance training in adolescence is ideal, but it’s never too late to begin, even if you already have osteoporosis or osteopenia. Resistance training is safe and not limited to fragile individuals.

At our gym in Annandale, we offer unlimited personalised coaching to help you prioritise your bone health and achieve your fitness goals. Join us today and take a proactive approach towards preventing and addressing osteoporosis effectively.

A team of researchers at the University of Sydney found that six months of strength training helped protect brain areas that are vulnerable to Alzheimers disease!

The researchers conducted a clinical trial of people at high risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The participants were randomly selected to do either computerised brain training, strength training, or combined computer and strength training. Strength training alone was found to lead to improved cognitive performance and protection from degeneration to areas of the brain, notably the hippocampus – responsible for learning and memory.

The article described strength training as a type of physical exercise that requires repetitive contraction of the major muscles groups against an opposing force. Here at Sydney Strength Training we do just that! We specialise is delivering high quality strength training, using the main lifts (Squats, bench press, deadlift, press and more!) which work the entire body.

In September 2017 I became Australia’s second ever-Starting Strength Coach.

During my tenure as a Starting Strength Coach, I also worked as an online coach at Starting Strength Online Coaching. I enjoyed my time as an SSC and the experience it gave me, but overtime my philosophies surrounding training and health did not closely align with that of my peers.

Without a doubt, training is important to ones overall health and (in my opinion) enjoyment of life. However, while training a large number of people for an extended period of time, I saw goals change; motivations shift and the stresses of life get in the way of their training. Although an obvious observation, a broad array of skills, knowledge and techniques are required to effectively deal with these changes.

It’s clear to me, that Barbell Medicine, a company whose approach to training and health brings modern medicine to strength and conditioning, is better equipped to deal with these changes. Which is why I recently joined their team, with fellow coach SST coach Joe Pemberton.
